Settlement Structure:
Case Summary:

Anthem announced in February 2015 that it had been the target of a data breach that exposed the personal information of roughly 79 million people. This settlement resolves a class action that charges that Anthem and certain other companies did not take adequate care in protecting the names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, healthcare ID numbers, and other information stored in the databases.

The number of people affected is so large because its subsidiaries and affiliates in different states store member data in Anthem’s database, even when those persons are not Anthem members. See Item 3 in the Notice at the settlement website to see a complete list of all companies whose member information may have been comprised during this breach.
